What Are Per Diem Stipends?
Travel healthcare professionals can receive tax-free stipends for housing, meals, and incidentals when working away from their tax home.
Housing Stipend
Covers lodging costs while on assignment. Can be used for apartments, extended stays, or applied to your own housing.
Meals & Incidentals
Daily allowance for food and small expenses. Usually referred to as M&IE (Meals & Incidental Expenses).
Tax-Free Benefits
When you qualify, these stipends are not taxed - significantly increasing your take-home pay compared to a staff position.
How GSA Rates Work
Federal Standard
GSA (General Services Administration) sets per diem rates used by federal employees. These are the standard for tax-free stipends.
Location-Based
Each county in the US has its own rate based on local cost of living. Major cities typically have higher rates.
Updated Annually
Rates are updated each fiscal year (October 1st). Some locations also have seasonal variations throughout the year.
Maximize Your Pay
Understanding GSA rates helps you negotiate better contracts. Always ask for full per diem rates!
